Harold "Stan" White
Stan White’s remarkable 35-year career with the Canaan Valley Ski Patrol and his unwavering advocacy for veterans have made him a cornerstone of the Canaan Valley skiing community and a champion for those who have served our country.
Dedication to Ski Patrol and Instruction
Stan began his service as a ski patrol candidate in 1988-89, becoming a Basic Ski Patroller in 1989. Over the years, he has held multiple leadership and instructional roles:

2010-2021: Director of the Canaan Valley Ski Patrol.

1992-present: Outdoor Emergency Care (OEC) Instructor and CPR Instructor/Trainer.

Co-authored the Lift Evac Manual for the Canaan Valley Ski Patrol with Phil Firl.
Planned and implemented a mass casualty response in coordination with the Canaan Valley Fire Department.

Through his role as an OEC instructor, Stan has trained approximately 95% of Canaan Valley patrollers and many others at Timberline Mountain, ensuring a high standard of care and professionalism within the ski patrol community.
Advocacy for Veterans
A tireless advocate for veterans, Stan has worked since 2010 with the Gathering of Mountain Eagles, organizing ski days and collaborating with local groups to provide support for veterans with PTSD and other disabilities. He has also contributed to programs like Project Healing Waters, the Paralyzed Veterans of America (PVA), and the West Virginia Gold Star Mothers (WVGSM), supporting activities such as fishing trips, mountain skiing events, and veteran-focused services.

Supporting the Honor and Remember Flag education initiative to honor fallen service members.

Assisting with Wreaths Across America, raising funds for wreaths to be placed on veterans' graves.

Decorating Gold Star Christmas trees throughout West Virginia, honoring post-9/11 military losses with stars and photographs.

Advising on veterans’ issues as a member of Senator Joe Manchin’s Veterans Council and contributing to the PACT Act, which includes a section named for his son, Andrew White.
Community and Education Contributions
Stan’s contributions extend beyond the ski slopes and veteran advocacy:

As an educator, he introduced skiing to school groups and Boy Scouts in Kanawha County, inspiring future generations of skiers.

Stan and Shirley, with Gold Star Mothers, supported homeless shelters and the VA Medical Foster Program, delivering goods and holiday gifts.

Promoted skiing and veteran support in collaboration with his wife, Shirley White, a former president of the WVGSM, whom he assisted in various initiatives benefiting Gold Star families and veterans.
Personal Life and Legacy
Stan, a 1965 graduate of Poca High School, earned multiple degrees, including an M.A. in Educational Administration from Marshall University. He worked as an educator and administrator in West Virginia schools, leaving a legacy of leadership and mentorship.
Married to Shirley White, Stan is the father of four children, all of whom skied at one time. His daughter, Christina, continues the family’s ski patrol tradition at Antelope Butte, Wyoming.
Stan White’s lifelong commitment to the ski patrol, his advocacy for veterans, and his community service have made an enduring impact on the Canaan Valley and beyond. His legacy is a testament to his dedication to helping others, both on and off the slopes.
